Application, training, selection and entry

Your Flying Future: All You Need to Know

Step 1

Where can I apply?

First, you apply at European Flight Academy. We offer the qualified and internationally recognized ATPL training program (Airline Transport Pilot License), which leads you directly to a career in a cockpit.

As soon as you have successfully completed the selection procedure, you sign a training contract with European Flight Academy. Which airline you eventually board will be decided during the application phase towards the end of your training, which gives you various options within Lufthansa Group.

Step 2

Which skills do I need for the selection process?

In Lufthansa Group’s selection process, we will assess whether you have the skills to be pilot – from a basic understanding of technical systems to social competence in teams. However, you do not need to have previous knowledge on aviation. At the end of the selection process, there is both a medical examination and an interview, in which you can present yourself to European Flight Academy.

Step 3

It all begins after signing the training agreement! After a twelve-month theory phase at European Flight Academy, you will be prepared to finally sit in a cockpit yourself. For this, you subsequently travel to one of our locations in Vero Beach and complete your first practical phase. Completing the ATPL program at European Flight Academy takes approx. two years.

Step 4

When Do I Sit in the Cockpit of a Commercial Flight?

Towards the end of your training, you apply at Eurowings. Once you begin working at an airline, you obtain the type rating for one of our aircraft types and are ready for your first commercial flight.

Step 5

The Lufthansa Group takes over a significant portion of the cost of training. Trainees are required to cover €60,000 in fees for the ATPL program. The entire Lufthansa Group offers attractive deferment options, which allow you to repay the fee once you begin working as a pilot.
