YOUR FLYING
FUTURE AT
AUSTRIAN AIRLINES: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

How do you become a pilot at Austrian Airlines? Our training program prepares you for a career in the cockpit.

Step 1

WHERE CAN I APPLY?

First, you apply at Austrian Airlines. European Flight Academy, the pilot training school of the Lufthansa Group, then offers you the Multi-Crew Pilot License (MPL) and Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) training programs, which qualify you for a seat in an Austrian Airlines cockpit.

As soon as you have successfully completed the selection procedure, you sign a training contract with Austrian Airlines.

Step 2

WHICH SKILLS DO I NEED FOR THE SELECTION PROCESS?

In Lufthansa Group’s selection process, we will assess whether you have the skills to be pilot – from a basic understanding of technical systems to social competence in teams. However, you do not need to have previous knowledge of aviation. You undergo a medical to complete the selection procedure.

Step 3

WHAT DOES THE TRAINING LOOK LIKE?

It all begins after signing the training agreement! After a twelve-month theory phase at European Flight Academy, you will be prepared to finally sit in a cockpit yourself.  For this, you subsequently travel to Phoenix and complete your first practical phase. Completing the MPL program at European Flight Academy takes approx. two years.

Step 4

WHEN WILL I SIT IN THE COCKPIT OF A COMMERCIAL FLIGHT?

Towards the end of your training, you apply at Austrian. Once you begin working at an airline, you obtain the type rating for one of our aircraft types and are ready for your first commercial flight.

Step 5

HOW DO I PAY FOR THE TRAINING?

Austrian Airlines pays for a portion of the training cost. Our trainees are required to cover €40,000 in fees. Generally, the Lufthansa Group offers its trainees attractive deferment options, which allow you to repay the fees once you begin working as a pilot at a Lufthansa Group airline.
