YOUR FLYING
FUTURE AT
AUSTRIAN AIRLINES: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

How do I become a pilot at Austrian Airlines? With European Flight Academy’s ATPL program, which prepares you for a career in the cockpit!

Step 1

WHERE CAN I APPLY?

First, you apply to European Flight Academy, the pilot training school of the Lufthansa Group. Our Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) program qualifies you to fly in an Austrian Airlines cockpit. During your application, you name your preferred airline as Austrian Airlines, which ensures that you enter the correct selection procedure. If you are then selected, you sign a training contract with European Flight Academy. Following your training, Austrian Airlines then invites you for an interview for a pilot position.

Step 2

WHICH SKILLS DO I NEED FOR THE SELECTION PROCESS?

In Lufthansa Group’s selection process, we will assess whether you have the skills to be pilot – from a basic understanding of technical systems to social competence in teams. However, you do not need to have previous knowledge of aviation. You undergo a medical to complete the selection procedure.

Step 3

WHAT DOES THE TRAINING LOOK LIKE?

Once you sign your training contract, you’re ready to go! A twelve-month theory course prepares you to finally take off in the cockpit of the aircraft at one of our training sites in Phoenix, Vero Beach or Rostock. Our entire program takes approx. two years to complete.

Step 4

WHEN WILL I SIT IN THE COCKPIT OF A COMMERCIAL FLIGHT?

Once you have successfully completed your training, you are invited for an interview to work as an Austrian Airlines pilot. If you named Austrian Airlines in your application, you will have already received the necessary Corporate Qualification (Firmenqualifikation or FQ). You will then receive your type rating for one of Austrian Airlines’ aircraft types. You’re now ready for your first commercial flight!

Step 5

HOW DO I PAY FOR THE TRAINING?

The LHG pays for a significant portion of the pilot training. With our Career Funding program, European Flight Academy’s interest-free repayment model, means you merely need to cover the cost of living during your training and not worry about the training costs themselves. Once you have completed your training and working as a pilot at a Lufthansa Group airline you begin repaying your share of the training cost.
